Follow-up Comment #2, bug #36073 (project octave): Thanks for the info: your hint has resolved my problem. Haven't seen the README file at the top-level directory of the ftp.gnu.org site, by just following the link ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/octave at http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/download.html . Moreover older versions before octave-2.9.14 are without signature file: this has triggered not looking for a general sig mechanism covering whole ftp://ftp.gnu.org/.
