I applied your patch, with a few minor style tweaks, here

I followed it with a patch that changes the facecolor property from "interp"
to "flat" based on the orientation of the color data vector since that is what
Matlab does (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/3f8b3588a9f0).
