Follow-up Comment #5:

I don't know why Ubuntu decided to package such an ancient version.  In any
case, you can use this PPA to get the latest stable version which is 3.6 
(https://launchpad.net/~octave/+archive/stable).  It is maintained by Mike
Miller who is a contributor to Octave.  I tested your code and it works on
3.6.
