Follow-up Comment #2, bug #40304 (project octave):

Can you build from Mercurial sources?  We are just a few weeks away from
releasing version 3.8 and it would be nice if this bug wasn't propagated for
another cycle.  There have been a number of improvements to fread internally
so I believe this has been fixed.  However, if you could build and test it
that would be great.
