Follow-up Comment #10, bug #36372 (project octave):

Also confirmed that the attached version does indeed improve performance on
the case in question. Input validation is broken, the test suite fails when
nargin > 2, but the rest of the unit tests pass for me. Function needs to be
cleaned up to conform to Octave coding style.
