Follow-up Comment #1, bug #40358 (project octave):
Oops,
This isn't a bug. It happened because the sysadmin added stuff to CLASSPATH
that didn't include the current directory. I added
export CLASSPATH=.:$CLASSPATH
to my .bashrc file and that fixed it
