Follow-up Comment #14, bug #40381 (project octave):

The fntests.log file should be created in whatever is your current directory
when you run __run_test_suite__.

Yes, I already noticed the problem with OCTAVE_HOME substitution.  The problem
is that main.cc doesn't have the code to automatically detect the current
installation directory to set OCTAVE_HOME.  It is just looking in the
environment for OCTAVE_HOME.  I'll see if I can fix that so it is detected
automatically.
