Follow-up Comment #18, bug #40436 (project octave): This does start to sound like there is an issue with gcc (it does happen) since the exact same source code and same options works under 4.8.1 and fails under 4.8.2. If you want to be thorough you could try and see if there is a problem with the compiler or with the libc library. Try upgrading just the library components such as libstdc++. Now try running the octave compiled under 4.8.1.
