Follow-up Comment #31, bug #40823 (project octave):

I did some testing on my Ubuntu 12.04 computer.
The problem is related to the desk top!!
I tried  different desk tops as follows

Gnome     Good
Gnome Classic  Bad
Gnome classic (no effects)  Good
Mate                Good  but with some startup garbage
ubuntu      Bad
ubuntu 2d   Good

This is all on the same machine --just log out and log back in with a
different desktop.
