Follow-up Comment #9:

Without this patch, the GUI started up minimized for me under GNOME 2 times
out of about 40. After applying this patch to the stable branch, I have not
seen it start up minimized after about 50 or so runs, so looks good to me!

I'll test some of the other odd minimization/maximization behaviors I've seen
using this patch to see if they are also solved.
