Follow-up Comment #2, bug #42471 (project octave):

I just removed Octave and then installed it from Debian backports. Same
behavior.

When running without the GUI, everything is fine. This is strange because I
have another computer running Debian Wheezy and the same version of Octave and
this problem does not occur on that machine.
