Follow-up Comment #4, bug #42543 (project octave):

Both the OP's example and your example work fine for me in gnuplot 4.6 using
the qt terminal but not the x11 terminal. Can you confirm if you "setenv
GNUTERM qt" in octave and then run your example, you get the correct behavior?
