You're absolutely right.
I'm trying to find a fix for this but am still rather confused by the code.
Should the 'c' option handled separately here:
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/491b0adfec95#l1.292
so as not to perform any int or double conversion?
