Follow-up Comment #10, bug #42614 (project octave):

I checked in a changeset that I believe fixes the problem with bad symbol
table lookups (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a0fd65914811). 
I'll wait for Richard's verification results before closing this report again.
