Thanks John. That did the trick (also needed enable-pic-flag).

./configure --enable-native-build --enable-pic-flag host_alias=gnu-linux

Can I ask, how do you choose gcc optimization flags (CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS,
FFLAGS)? Is it necessary to go into indivudual .mk files and add/edit them? I
really just want to add march=native across the board.
