Follow-up Comment #4:

that installer is still in testing phase and was not intended for public use
yet, anyways if you want to help improving it your feedback is very welcome.

I'll have a look at the plotting problem if I ca reproduce it and release a
new version of the installer soon.

as for the compatibility with homebrew, the binary installer puts everything
into 

/usr/local/octave/<version number>

so the interference should be minimal, furthermore
if you use homebrew you may want to install Octave 
via homebrew directly, this installer is mainly for 
those who don't have and don't want a package manager
on their mac.
