Follow-up Comment #2, bug #43400 (project octave):

Did you use the latest file versions from the repo, or the plain io-2.2.4
files? (i.e., the fix from bug #43331)

Another trick may be to use
xlsfinfo (<filename>, <interface>)
(same for odsfinfo)
