Follow-up Comment #4, bug #43419 (project octave):

Feel free to close this issue.  The original problem I was trying to report
was optim-1.2.2 compilation of __bfgsmin.cc fails with "error: 'INT_MAX' was
not declared in this scope".  But I see now the problem was I was using an
outdated version and has been fixed by including <climits.h>.

It seems the bug here is downstream; it looks like the Gentoo Linux g-octave
package manager still pulls from subversion octave forge instead of the newer
mercurial repositories, so since I had just synced I didn't consider at the
time that my version of optim was out of date.  I will file a bug downstream
about it.
