Issue 1)
Did you close the editor window tab completely? To re-enable it use the
Window menubar option. See the attached screenshot.
Issue 2)
How did you build and install Octave? Was it a download of the rc3 tarball
and then './configure; make; make install'?
It seems pretty clear that the reason no documentation is displayed is because
the file is missing for some reason. In my installation there is a file
'/usr/local/share/octave/4.0.0-rc3/etc/built-in-docstrings'
Issue 3)
Is Octave working at all? Looking at the screenshot, after you typed 'a' it
should have responded with
error: 'a' undefined near line 1 column 1
Try something simple like
x = 2 + 2
and see whether you get anything back.
