Thanks for your bug report. I'm unable to reproduce this on either CentOS 6 or
Debian testing. I tried building from a freshly extracted
octave-3.8.2.tar.bz2:
$ tar xf octave-3.8.2.tar.bz2
$ cd octave-3.8.2
$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.local
$ make -j3
and Octave builds successfully. Were any optional features disabled in your
build? Anything weird about permissions of the source directory?
Can you try again with a freshly extracted 3.8.2?
Can you try the current release candidate for version 4.0.0?
