Follow-up Comment #5, bug #45091 (project octave):

Unfortunately, I get the same error with 2.3.0 RC2, using the MacPorts octave
package mechanism.

The good news is that this seems to be a MacPorts problem:

I just manually installed and loaded stk-2.2.1 from within octave, w/o any
problems.

I'm going to see if I can get some help over @ MacPorts to figure out what is
going one here.
