Follow-up Comment #2:

There doesn't seem to be any indication that Matlab itself should even be
doing what it appears to do
(http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/fileattrib.html?#inputarg_name).

Is there any way for you to test with Matlab on a Unix platform to see if this
is general behavior, or in fact an oddity only of their own implementation on
Windows?
