Follow-up Comment #41, bug #47346 (project octave):
No, that was not it. The install is to /usr/local
and has been for a long time.
But, now the installed system runs as it should!
A new bug report on what is wrong with make install
and make uninstall might be good.
For the time being, I will run a laundering script
before make install
