Follow-up Comment #2, bug #47465 (project octave):
evince is used as a pdf viewer, not involved in the building process. The
errors are output on stdout or stderr of evince, and visible in the terminal
where evince was launched.
The octave.pdf displays fine. Looking up the corresponding sections, I find no
issues in for instance the links in the index to those sections.
Certainly a low priority issue. It just caught my attention as this is
different behavior from 4.0.1-rc4. This is on RHEL.
I'll keep monitoring this and report findings.
