Follow-up Comment #20, bug #47415 (project octave): How about limiting the operations that are available with permutation matrices matrices so that they can only permute the rows or columns of other matrices? Then this issue disappears and you will have to explicitly convert to sparse or full if you want to perform other operations on them.
