Follow-up Comment #1:

Confirmed.  The __modified__ property of the figure is set to "on".  Using
drawnow() or refresh() does change the __modified__ property to "off", but the
figure is still not redrawn.  Only moving the figure or shifting the focus
from the Command Window to the Figure Window and back again will truly cause
an update.
