Follow-up Comment #21, bug #48474 (project octave): This is not a "gnuplot bug" this is bug with the gnuplot binary distributed with the official octave -- it just does not have any cairo based terminals. You can get the laterst 5.1 but if you do not compile those terminals in they would not work either. Ethan Merritt repeatedly said that the cairo-based are preferred terminals; "x11", "windows" are legacy. So I do not think it is a good idea to have a work-around in octave to work with those terminals.
