Sorry for the confusion I caused. But axes already store the "clim" and
"climmode" properties.
I agree with you that adding a "colormap property" to axes is probably enough
for most use cases. However, I won't be able to start work on a changeset for
this until in two weeks. But with your last comment, I think I know what to
do.
