Follow-up Comment #15, bug #48690 (project octave):
figured out a working pattern. relatively simple, passes all tests. I still
suspect this was a hack without considering odd empty array cases, and later
versions of matlab might change the behavior. left TODO notes in there to
check against future versions.
will be uploading final (?) patches shortly.
