Details:

try
octave:1> o=javaObject('eu.simuline.octave.OctaveInterfaceTester')
octave:2> o.bdVal=4
octave:3> o.bdVal
ans = [](0x0)

Note  that bdVal has type BigDecimal and thus o.bdVal does not make any sense.


[](0x0) referring to null is the initial value. 
So it seems as if o.bdVal=4 is silently ignored.
