Follow-up Comment #1, bug #49054 (project octave):
FWIW, in the mxe-octave binaries for windows it works OOTB the way you wish.
Must be some default setting then.
In the Edit | Preferences pane => file browser tab, I do see ".m" listed in
the "Extensions of files to be opened in the default text editor" setting. Can
you check if that also set in your preferences?
