Follow-up Comment #38, bug #48873 (project octave):

I can manage pdf output on my side by changing the settings of my viewer
(acroread, gv, or okular) to disable graphics smoothing.  It is annoying that
a format that is supposed to be portable (Portable Document Format = PDF) is
in fact not portable and depends on the user's settings.  In this case, a
rasterized graphics format like png is much more portable and looks the same
in every image viewer.
