Follow-up Comment #15, bug #49214 (project octave):

Actually, a little more testing shows that writing the history file always
fails when the hidden attribute is set.

The issue is not with Octave, but with the Readline library that Octave is
using.  I don't see an easy way to fix this.

The code is eventually in liboctave/util/oct-rl-hist.c.
