Follow-up Comment #22, bug #49216 (project octave): Verdana is not a monospace font ("i" and "l" definitely takes less space then "e" or "t"). I think it is just not a very good font. It was designed for low-resolution media (like computer screens) which at that time was like 72pdi or something (circa win98). Aial was designed to be Helvetica substitution and it is a print font (designed for media with 300dpi and higher). Try some more modern fonts.
