Follow-up Comment #27, bug #50183 (project octave):

To narrow things further, try the following start-up options individually:


octave --no-init-file


and 


octave --no-site-file


The first one disables the user's ~/.octaverc and any local ./.octaverc file. 
The second one disables the site-wide octaverc file.

That might help point out which rc file is in error.
