Follow-up Comment #3, bug #52150 (project octave):
AFAIK gnuplot relies on freetype/fontconfig only for the "extent" property
(approximate) computation. This will leave functions such as "annotation" or
"legend" without a way to determine how large the text is expected to be. So
unfortunately solution 2 doesn't look acceptable either.
Is there any reason for not including a few font files if their license is
free?
