Follow-up Comment #14, bug #52150 (project octave):

I may also add a configure option to make Octave play nice with distributions,
something like


./configure --with-system-freefont=/usr/share/fonts/opentype/freefont ...


But that shouldn't hold up the basics of getting this done.
