Follow-up Comment #18, bug #43651 (project octave):
I am actually advocating to avoid use of ghostscript.
Anyway on my system Symbol is google-croscore "SymbolNeu.ttf".
Inkscape uses cairo library for svg to pdf conversion, so converting symb.svg
to pdf preserves the specified font (Symbola):
