Follow-up Comment #2:

The error message comes Octave core and changed between Octave 4.0 and 4.2. 
Since the current image package should still work in Octave 4.0, I have
modified the proposed patch so it passes in both 4.0 and 4.2. I have checked
and it still passes with Octave 4.3.

This was applied to the stable branch and will be part of the next patch
release.
