Follow-up Comment #3:

I just noted that my version of Qt5 doesn't support QOpenGLWidget and I read
in another report (I can't remember which) that this "black background" had
been observed by others (including Markus I think) up to the point where jwe
introduced the use of QOpenGLWidget instead of QGLWidget.

I'll assume that that my version of QT5 is outdated and close this report.
