Turns out the same input validation was being used for trimesh as well.  I
used your template from trisurf to also update trimesh and checked in both
changes under your name here

Since you are now officially a contributor to Octave, would you like to have
your name appear at the beginning of the manual?  It's up to you.  Some people
like it, others prefer to remain more anonymous.
