Follow-up Comment #3:
The patch definitely helps with the flickering, although the graphic slowness
is probably caused by something else.
I did timing with
tic; DoublePendulum; toc
4.2.1 : 38.6 seconds
dev : 67.7 seconds
dev w/patch: 63.1 seconds
Since it is a visual improvement I pushed the patch here
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/0fa322bf312d).
