Your changes make erase give the wrong answer to this example.
erase('this is it',['this';'is'])
Sahil and I spent hours looking int this problem, and I believe we came up
with a good compromise. Then Andy took over and made changes then Rik took
over and made more changes. The result was that all the careful work done was
thrown out.
