Follow-up Comment #3:
The Octave source code has the is_empty function marked as deprecated. It's
the compiler that is checking that attribute and printing out the warning
message. I'm guessing that gcc 4.8.4 is relatively old and maybe they have an
internal issue with the first printed warning message. It's not an Octave bug
in any case so I'll close this report.
