I checked in the following changeset:

This change fixes the crash for me.
It is also a major change in the way signal handling works. See the comments
in the changeset for some details. I wouldn't be surprised if I broke
something other than the ability to interrupt calls to library functions. But
that was intentional and at this point unavoidable as I don't know how to
solve that problem easily.
I have not tested this on Windows, but will as soon as buildbot creates an
installer for me.
