Follow-up Comment #3, bug #52858 (project octave):
I think these functions are provided by gnulib, so I would prefer to use those
and be able to just assume that they exist. I do understand that it would
require some wrapper functions for portability, but I would prefer to use
those as we do for other functions instead of adding #ifdefs in liboctave or
libinterp.
