Follow-up Comment #2:

Happily, this has already been fixed on the development branch of Octave that
will become version 4.4.0.  But there has been a lot of work on the
development branch and figuring out just which changeset fixed the problem and
backporting that is beyond the small staff of volunteers for Octave.

To see the fix either build from development sources or wait for the 4.4.0
release which should be out this year.
