Follow-up Comment #55, bug #49053 (project octave):

I forgot to add that I corrected my X-server's DPI setting by creating the
file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier      "eDP-1" # as reported by "xrandr -q"
        DisplaySize     346 192 # in mm
EndSection

now, the X-sever reports the correct DPI value

[/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d]$ xdpyinfo | grep dots
  resolution:    282x286 dots per inch
