Follow-up Comment #40, bug #52775 (project octave):
Mike's patch works for me, but this is with Texinfo 6.1. I purposefully
modified the generated conftest.texi to have @ssortas which is an invalid
command and the correct branch is taken and docs are disabled.
Maybe Texinfo 4.13 really doesn't return exit status correctly, in which case
we can use the check on the size of conftest.info as a proxy. We will have to
wait for Guillaume to run a test.
