Using hg bisect the problem changeset was introduced about three months ago
with this change

use QOpenGLWidget if it is available
My version of Qt is 5.6.1 if that makes a difference. It seems like we used
to pass certain QGLFormat options to the QGLWidget in the constructor, but we
have no such options for QOpenGLWidget. That might be an issue. In any case,
I'm wondering now whether multi-sampling and anti-aliasing are getting enabled
with the new QOpenGLWidget.
